I'm not good at artist statements, instead here's some information about what I do, I hope it's helpful...

What is the inspiration for your art?

I take inspiration from the life I've lived and people that have effected me in my life and helped me see things in a new and different light and ultimately changed my perspective in some way. I am inspired by both the music that surrounds me in my life and I purposely seek inspiration from music whilst composing an image, and from the places that make up my existence and my world view.

What is your process like?

I keep a journal on ideas, just things people say that captures my attention, and little sketches on things to mind maps and so on, I use the journal to develop ideas, I try to work from the subconscious, so develop ideas in an abstract way, and then turn them into a more figurative composition, most of my paintings have to do with transformative experiences whether it is the emotion of a relationship breakup to how I was transformed by my experience in Tara in 2007 at the M3 motorway protest which I am still feeling the effects of to this day.

What is your background?

I was introduced to  painting at a young age by my grandfather, but I was drawn to graphic design in my teens mainly because I wanted to design album artwork for bands, I studied graphic design in a number of different colleges, but was drawn back to painting, I decided to take what I knew about graphic design to painting and mix in a lot of other influences and things I've picked up along the way.

What are your influences?

I'm influenced by writers such as Hunter S. Thompson, artists such as Louis LeBrocqouy, Gustav Dore, Harry Clarke, Arthur Rackham, I'm influenced by both classical art, neoclassical paintings and romantic paintings, and at the same time highly influenced by modern illustrative work, my paintings are about combining classical influence with a modern illustrative take on these ideas, so it uses both classical techniques and more modern ideas found in graphic design over the past century.

The style of the current paintings are a take on occult images, the perspective is deliberately off to add a magical quality to the subjects under discussion. The paintings are developed metaphorically from life experiences and incorporate a great deal of symbolism the represent the idea or emotional experience, there is an element of romantic composition in the story telling of these images. The idea is to take classic mysticism and turn it around to represent modern struggles to a modern audience, although all struggles are timeless.
