“Forget Where We Are” photographic exhibition

St John’s Central College Photography Exhibition takes place at Camden Palace Hotel, Camden Quay, Cork, from June 13th to 27th

“Forget Where We Are” is a collective exhibition by graduates from St John’s Central College, Cork, who have just completed the 2 year photography course, which encompasses a broad range of photographic genres, resulting in work ranging from Documentary and Fine Art, to Portraiture. Each individual photographer has been provided with the tools necessary, through the nurturing and encouraging environment provided at St Johns, to create new work reflecting the photographer’s own individual styles and presence.

Hosted by Camden Palace Hotel, with free public entry, the exhibition will run from the 13th to the 27th June, with a grand opening on Thursday, June 13th at 6.30pm. The exhibition will be officially opened by Pamela Condell, nationally renowned photographer and member of the curatorial partnership, Stag and Deer, incidentally also a photography gradate of St John’s Central College.

In a world where time has become a commodity, the ability to be still and to appreciate the beauty around you is becoming less and less important. But what happens when we allow ourselves such time? Do we consider this as time wasted? Or do we begin to recognise that, which would have otherwise escaped us?

“Forget Where We Are” is exactly this, the moments in between moments. The events that go unnoticed purely because we do not allow ourselves the time to look. Whether it is through personal experience, the appreciation of beauty, personal loss or candid moments, there are moments in every day waiting for us, waiting for our acknowledgement, but only if we have the time to do so. A sample of the work in the exhibition can be found at www.forgetwhereweare.com

“The inherent beauty of photography is its ability to capture and preserve these moments. The cameras ability to fix a moment in time, allows such fleeting events to revisited time and again. As graduating photographers, the camera has become an extension of our respective eyes and personalities. Each of us has found our own respective uses for the camera and in doing so, we have created differing bodies of work, with one common thread running through each. Every photographer has allowed themselves the time to look, to appreciate and to preserve such moments.”- Eric Tobin, Student exhibiting work at “Forget Where We Are”.

Danni Walters, Student exhibiting work at “Forget Where We Are”- “I am really looking forward to our exhibition. It is such an amazing opportunity and experience for us as emerging photographers to showcase our work. After 2 years of blood, sweat and tears, the exhibition is a wonderful way to end our hard but fulfilling journey!  Now I just can't wait to celebrate the talents, skills and passion which have been nurtured and guided by the fantastic lecturers at St. John's College along with the great friends I have made along the way.”

St John's has been the starting point for numerous successful photographic careers, each citing the dedication of and encouragement provided by the lecturers as a major factor in their success. The future of Irish photography depends on lecturers with the dedication and creativity which St John's is blessed with and as a result the current crop of graduates will ensure that the future of Irish photography is in safe hands.
