Sacred Harp singing in Camden Palace Hotel:
Each Thursday sees an ecclectic group of Cork-based singers gather together to sing songs from the great Sacred Harp singing tradition of the United States of America. One of the oldest forms of folk singing of the U.S., and part of the 'shaped note' genre of singing, Sacred Harp singing derives its name from two sources: the songbooks of American spiritual folk singing were known as the singers' 'harps', which were and still are brimming with sacred music; the second source is rooted in the old Christian concept of the human voice as God's instrument - his "sacred harp". While the singing tradition is a non-denominational Christian one, in Cork we focus on the music and the secular community spirit, or 'craic'; this group is open to people of any creed and any- or even no - musical background.
Everyone and anyone is warmly invited to join the Thursday singings and learn to sing the 'shape notes'. The note-heads are written with different shapes denoting pitch - a technique which makes sight-singing easier to learn for the absolute beginner, and which improves the sight-singing of those familiar with Western musical notation. Just ask someone who looks like they know what they're doing which of the four parts you should sit at, and we'll help you through the initial steps. As with anything, practice improves ability, and while you may feel overwhelmed at the beginning, after a few sessions the difference in your sight-singing ability will be marked.
Come join this ever-growing vibrant singing community at the Camden Palace Hotel, and help us shake the Palace walls with pure vocal harmony!
Every Thursday, 7-9pm
Suggested donation of €4 goes directly from the hat to the coffers of the Camden Palace.
