You are invited to take part in an experiment that combines improvised Afro/Brazilian dance with a set poly rhythmic musical structure. - this will involve a 12 hour performance where the participants - musicians and dancers will execute a synchronised and repetitive rhythmic structure.
This will be performed for the public for an extended period of time. We aim to challenge the perception of time scale within music . Natural variation within this rhythmic structure will result from human error, which will add to the texture of the of performance. The psychological effects on both the musician and the dancers will be documented. For willing participants our 'non-stop tumbao' team will provide free dance, music and psychological workshops Music workshops We will teach the tumbao and clave percussion pattern to the musicians who have volunteered. These are basic Afro/Latino poly rhythms (3 over 2) that can be heard in most traditional music throughout the world. The musicians will play the patterns as precise (with no improvisation) as possible. This pattern will be easy to play for any musician at any level. Dance Workshops The dance workshops will be facilitated by Laysa Alvarenga ( Popular Bale of Recife, Frevo School of Recife, Zambocla ), visiting Maracatu dance instructor from Brasil. There will be talks given on how to best prepare the participants to maintain focus throughout the experiment. Maciej Sawicki 100 miles marathon runner, will give these talks. Michael O' Mara will teach breathing and stretching exercises to enhance endurance levels for both dancers and musicians. |
